Steel has been essential since the Industrial revolution. It is produced from iron ore, their main raw material. The steel production process also uses coal. Promoting the steel industry in Brazil, where their head offices and their major operations are located, is part of Vale’s global strategy.

They work in the steel market through joint ventures, like with the ThyssenKrupp Companhia Siderúrgica do Atlântico (TKCSA) plant. Located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, it is one of the biggest and most modern steel mills in the world.

They also have a participation in California Steel Industries, Inc. (CSI), which produces flat, laminated steels and ducts in the United States.
