Kyivvodokanal is the oldest and most powerful water supply company in Ukraine and one of the largest in Europe.
The history of Kyivvodokanal is closely related to the history of Kyiv. For one and a half thousand years of its existence Kyiv, one of the largest cities in Europe, could not do without water supply and sewerage systems, in the process of development of which the most interesting technological innovations of each era were always used. The first stage of the city water supply system was built and started in 1872. It is from this year that traditionally begins the counting of the history of Kyivvodokanal. For the first time, the people of Kiev were able to appreciate the benefits of a centralized water pipeline that supplied water from the Dnieper directly to their homes.
In 1939, the Dnieper Water Supply Station was built with a complex of treatment facilities, including drinking water disinfection. Built in 1961, the Desnian Water Supply Station provided the bulk of the city's drinking water supply. In 1965, the Bortnitskaya Aeration Station was commissioned, which provided mechanical and biological treatment of all Kyiv sewage.
Today, river water is recycled for drinking and transported to homes and businesses, and then sewage is treated and returned to the Dnieper. Kyivvodokanal controls the quality and composition of water at each stage of the cycle. About 1000 samples are sampled and analyzed daily.
Water from three sources - the Dnieper, the Desna and the artesian wells - rises to the Dnieper and Desniansk stations, where complex technological processes of its treatment take place.
The Kiev water supply system consists of about 4,200 km of networks. It is this distance that overtakes 700 million liters of clean water every day that go to homes and businesses. Sewage, often with excessive contaminants and debris, flows through the pipelines for almost 3,000 km and enters the Bortnitsky Aeration Station, where their mechanical and biological treatment takes place.
Almost 7 thousand employees of the enterprise, 450 units of special equipment, dozens of objects with complex equipment and technologies provide these vital processes for the people of Kiev.
In addition, since 2015, Kyivvodokanal is the responsible contractor of Ukraine's largest public utility investment project - the reconstruction of the Bortnitsky Aeration Station. It was then that a loan agreement was signed between the Governments of Ukraine and Japan to raise funds for the reconstruction of the BSA on the most favorable terms for Ukraine from the Japan International Cooperation Agency. The Verkhovna Rada approved the law on ratification of the Treaty in the form of an exchange of notes between the Government of Ukraine and the Government of Japan, and the President of Ukraine signed it. Construction work will last for almost 6 years.
The construction and commissioning of the long-awaited facility, which ensures the reliable operation of the city's sewer system - the Second Thread of the Main City Sewer Collector, has also been completed. The construction phase was restored in 2015. This was made possible by rhythmic funding from the city and state budgets in 2015-2017. Thus, during the last two years, works have been completed and, accordingly, more funds have been spent than in the previous 9 years.
