The Wellcome Sanger Institute is a genome research centre set up in 1992 by the Wellcome Trust and the Medical Research Council in order to further the knowledge of genomes, and in particular to play a substantial role in the sequencing and interpretation of the human genome. This information will underpin research on human biology and disease in this century and beyond. The major theme of its research is the study of genome variation: naturally occurring and engineered, inherited and somatic, in humans, pathogens, human cells and mice. Its science is organised into four Scientific Programmes, each defining a major area of research with a particular biological, disease or analytic focus. In all cases, the studies provide insights into human, pathogen, cellular evolution, the phenotypic and hence biological consequences of genome variation and the processes which cause mutations.
