Women's Rights Action Movement of Solomon Islands (WRAM)
About

WRAM is a non-governmental organisation founded in 2011 by motivated women and men who believe in the cause for gender equality.

The founders saw a need to effectively and consistently remind government of gender issues in the country, and their commitments to addressing these issues, focusing on the need to reform laws and policies.

It is envisaged that WRAM will work with duty bearers to support them to address gender inequality faced by women through policy and legislative reform. This is a vital step that needs to happen in parallel with other key initiatives that are happening in the country.

Women make up half of the population of Solomon Islands, however, they continue to face historic systematic discrimination based on sex and gender. As a result of this discrimination, women are subject to challenges in enjoying respect, protection and fulfillment of their rights.

Key gender issues include the low participation of women in decision making and leadership, the high prevalence of violence against women and girls and lack of institutionalization of polices for women’s economic empowerment.

Mission

WRAM will support government to promote, protect and fulfill the rights of women and men equally, to take affirmative action to address inequalities faced by women, and to work with non-government organisations to promote good governance in Solomon Islands.

Vision

Their vision is for all Solomon Islands women, men, girls and boys to enjoy equal access and enjoyment of human rights, to participate in leadership, be free from gender based violence and to benefit equally from development and economic advancements.
