About

Founded in 1947, the World Federalist Movement-Institute for Global Policy (WFM-IGP) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization committed to the realization of global peace and justice through the development of democratic institutions and the application of international law.

WFM-IGP includes a comprehensive set of programs that work to protect civilians from the threat of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity; facilitate transparency in governance; increase access to justice; and promote the application of the rule of law. They work in partnership with the United Nations, governments, and other international and regional institutions around the globe—as well as with thousands of committed individuals and world leaders—to advance a mission of peace, prosperity, and security for all.

WFM-IGP is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization in the United States and a registered Stichting (charitable foundation) in The Netherlands.

Leadership

WFM-IGP is governed by its statutes and bylaws that provide the governance framework concerning membership, finances and decision-making.

WFM-IGP’s Congress is called by the Council normally every four years, and with no longer intervals than six years to review the fundamental policy of the Movement. If need be, it can update the Statutes and Bylaws or pass Policy Resolutions. The Congress is chaired by the President of the Movement. The Congress elects a Council which meets between Congresses to monitor the activities of the Movement.

Both groups are made up of representatives from Member and Associated Organizations. The Council then elects an Executive Committee which typically meets four times annually. The Executive Committee monitors and gives concrete direction to the Movement.

The International Secretariat coordinates the efforts of the Movement by directing programs and ensuring communication between the various organizations.

WFM-IGP’s major programs include:

The Coalition for the International Criminal Court is the largest partnership in the world advancing the cause of international justice. Including more than 2,500 civil society organizations from 150 countries, the Coalition is leading the global fight to end genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity through a commitment to the core values of human rights and justice.

The International Democratic Governance (IDG) program works to improve the functioning and effectiveness of international institutions; promote transparency in the United Nations (UN) reform process by monitoring developments on these issues; provide information to stakeholders worldwide; and mobilize civil society to take concerted action where it can be most effective.

The International Coalition for the Responsibility to Protect is a global network of civil society organizations dedicated to advancing the Responsibility to Protect (RtoP or R2P). ICRtoP is working to increase awareness and understanding of the RtoP norm, strengthen relevant actors’ capacity to prevent and respond to RtoP crimes, and advance the development of the norm to ensure that it is upheld consistently and effectively for future generations.
