About

The Yale Global Health Leadership Institute (GHLI) develops leadership through education and research programs that strengthen health systems and promote health equity and quality of care. GHLI supports health leaders to improve the performance of health systems through leadership development, quality improvement programs, and health systems research. The Institute is also a center for debate and progress on leadership and other critical global health issues.

GHLI is guided by a model of strategic problem solving which posits that the close integration of academic and practitioner perspectives is central to ensuring positive and lasting change. This model requires specification of the targeted problem, identification of core strategies to achieve a defined objective, leadership to implement the strategy and rigorous measurement to support continuous improvement. GHLI champions a relational framework for leadership, understanding leadership as a dynamic role within a group that can unlock synergies leading to the success of the organization.

What We Do

Despite an increased commitment to global health from governments, foundations and others, the design and performance of health care delivery systems often fails to ensure that advances and discoveries are effectively applied. Consequently, available resources are poorly distributed and the promise to resolve global health challenges goes largely unfulfilled.

Although often overlooked, effective leadership and management are critical to strengthening health systems and achieving large-scale goals. The Yale Global Health Leadership Institute (GHLI), led by Elizabeth Bradley, Ph.D., and Michael Skonieczny, M.P.A., develops leadership at Yale and around the world through education and research programs that strengthen health systems and promote health equity and quality of care. GHLI brings together policymakers, practitioners and researchers to foster evidence-based problem solving, inspire leadership and debate critical issues in global health.

Where We Work

Through applied training and research programs, GHLI supports countries in their efforts to systematically evaluate and improve organizational performance and health outcomes. While each country program is unique, there are key components that define the GHLI approach:

  • GHLI’s primary focus is the development and support of sustained quality improvement collaborations designed to promote effective leadership capacity and efficient management systems at the health facility level.
  • In partnership with universities overseas, GHLI coordinates tailored professional development programs for health sector managers, clinicians and other leaders. These programs develop critical leadership and management skills through certificate and degree programs, workshops and web-based learning.
