For over two decades, Afolabi has held various leadership positions in the private and public sectors with the more recent experience involving working with development partners to institutionalize public sector governance and public financial management reforms. He serves as a Fiscal Policy Advisor in the Office of the Vice President of Nigeria and a Technical Advisor to the Director General Budget Office of the Federation and the Honourable Minister of Finance. He currently represents Nigeria on the Inclusive Budget for Climate Change in Africa (IBFCCA), driving the initiative to mainstream gender and climate finance issues into Nigeria's Federal Government budget. His expertise spans the areas of Public Financial Management, Public Sector Economics, and Governance, Strategic Planning, Public Policy Analysis, International Development, management consulting, as well as capacity building. He has carried out economic analysis, policy review, and production of technical reports for governments (national and sub-national) as well as for international research and development agencies. He is imbued with the ability to disseminate knowledge through partnerships, collaborations, and networks. I have worked with multi-stakeholder action networks to advance fiscal transparency, public participation, and accountability in the fiscal governance and public sector space. Notable among these agencies include: The World Bank United Kingdom's Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO), formerly Department for International Development (DFID) Collaborative African Budget Reforms Initiative (CABRI), African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF), United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Collaborative Africa Budget Reform Initiative (CABRI), and recently with the United Nations Development Programme in the Republic of South Sudan as a Public Financial Management Technical Specialist. His work has resulted in many reform initiatives in various aspects of public finance management in Nigeria. This includes Aid Transition Management, Tax Expenditure Management, Citizen participation in the Budget process, and the institution of manageable continuous amendments to relevant laws through Finance Acts. He has facilitated several workshops and conferences on public finance management locally and internationally, he led the Nigerian cohort to the CABRI Building Public Financial Capacity Program in 2020. He is the recipient of several awards and a Presidential Commendation for national service.
