Carlos Couto was born in 1958 in Porto. In 1984 he began teaching Geography and Environmental Sciences as a substitute teacher in secondary schools. In 1989 finished his degree in Anthropology at FCSH Lisbon. In 1996 obtained a Master's scholarship and in 1998 defended his thesis in the field of African Studies, having published his first book about the island of Santiago in Cape Verde in 2001. In 2003 he was integrated into the Career Teaching Framework of the Ministry of Education. In 2007 he defended his doctoral thesis and three years later published his second book with focus on the island of Santiago. Collaborated for three years with the Nursing School of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto lecturing Health Anthropology. He worked as an integrated researcher at the CEAUP the University of Porto and at the CEA ISCTE in Lisbon. He is currently an Associated Researcher of the CEI - Universitary Institute of Lisbon. He has published several articles.
