Duncan Macintosh

My professional focus is on development issues, non-profits, fund-raising and philanthropy in Australia and the Asia Pacific with interests including the Internet and how its run, agriculture and rural development and the role of Asia in international development. Over the past 15 years, I’ve founded and led Foundations in Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia with a focus on innovative strategies to increase investment in key development sectors. As Development Director at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines, I successfully led efforts to establish the IRRI Fund Singapore as part of the Institute’s 50th anniversary fund raising campaign. As Development Director at Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC) in Australia, I managed and led the establishment of the APNIC Foundation in Hong Kong and then Australia as part of efforts to increase investment in the Internet’s development in the Asia Pacific. At IRRI and APNIC, I’ve been part of teams that have raised millions of dollars for their respective causes, engaging with governments, philanthropists, Foundations, corporations and development agencies. I’ve led and advised on the formation of Boards and sat on non-profit Boards in Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia. I’ve developed and managed multi-cultural teams in Thailand, Philippines, Singapore and Australia with a focus on fund raising and philanthropy (and journalism). Before joining IRRI, I was the Foreign Communications Advisor at the Stock Exchange of Thailand during the Asian financial crisis. Before that, I was a journalist in Bangkok, Hong Kong, London and Australia and I’m still a journalist at heart!
