I studied and started my clinical career in the midst of natural disasters: genocide refugees from Rwanda, flight into forests in full academic years, armed conflicts, volcanic eruption, political uncertainty, budgetary uncertainties, etc. In 2001 while I was a trainee doctor, after the volcanic eruption that forced me to take refuge in Rwanda, I was recruited by the Belgian Red Cross as the attending physician of the Mudende refugee camp.
