Michael van der Ven

I currently work as the Senior Director for Strategic Finance serving a Seattle based Family Office. I serve as the primary owner and point of accountability for financial management, operational budgets and philanthropy. My 2 major areas of focus include organizational strategy and annual planning with a primary focus on efficiency, stewardship and financial impact. Other focus areas include budget management, reporting, investments, and analytics. I recently took on this role after spending 6 years as the Senior Director of Finance and Operations at Pivotal Ventures where I helped build a 25-person Finance and Operations Team that supported Financial Planning and Budgeting, Contracting, Philanthropy Execution, Analytics, Business Operations & Technology Services. I joined Pivotal from Fred Hutch in Seattle where I was Director of Finance and Operations for the HIV Vaccine Trials Network. I oversaw all aspects of operations supporting a global network of 40 clinical trials sites and 2000 scientific collaborators working toward the development of a HIV Vaccine. Prior to my time at Fred Hutch, I worked in a dual role with the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) as Country Director for Cambodia and Director of Finance and Operations for the Southeast Asia region. I also worked for CHAI in Ethiopia as Deputy Country Director where I helped manage CHAI's largest country office with programs that spanned the health sector. Prior to joining CHAI, I spent 4 years working with the American Red Cross (ARC) as a Finance Manager for its Biomedical Services unit, and also as the Country Representative for the Maldives Tsunami Program managing operations and programs in Water & Sanitation and Psychosocial Support. Ijoined ARC in 2006 following a position at the World Bank in Washington DC, where I worked in a Leadership and Organizational Effectiveness group which focused on strengthening overall management capacity in the Bank across the globe. My background is in Financial Management, having also worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers in both the US and Australia. I have an MBA from INSEAD in France, and an undergraduate degree in both Finance and Computer Applications from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. I live in Seattle with my wife (Carla- Peruvian) and three boys (18,16,12). I love to travel having visited over 65 countries while being outdoors whether it be camping, skiing or hiking with my family. I also serve on various local boards including as the Treasurer for the North Seattle Baseball Association.
