Mona Ali Khalil is a respected public international lawyer with 25+ years of UN experience as well as a unique combination of expertise at the intersection of international diplomacy and international law. Between 1993 and 2015, she served as a Senior Legal Officer of the UN Office of the Legal Counsel in New York, New York, where she led the peacekeeping and sanctions teams; she also served on successive special assignments involving the conflicts in Iraq, Libya and Syria. Between 2005 and 2009, she was seconded to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria, where she served as a Senior Legal Officer; she advised on technical cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, promoted the international legal framework for combatting nuclear terrorism and ensured compliance with the non-proliferations sanctions regimes. After resigning from the UN, she founded MAK LAW INTERNATIONAL, a strategic consulting service, where she is currently advising governments and organizations of the UN system to promote peace and security as well as organizational ethics and the international rule of law. She is an Affiliate of the Harvard Law School Program on International Law and Armed Conflict. She lectures regularly at the Vienna Diplomatic Academy and is a published author.
