Simon Bell is an international investor and consultant, specializing in emerging markets investment strategies. He advises companies on their global investment decisions and advises governments on strategies to accelerate investment in key sectors of the economy. Simon was for many years a leader in the emerging markets practice of A.T. Kearney, the global management consulting firm. He helped to establish the firm's offices in Russia, South Africa and India, and later became Director of the Global Business Policy Council, based in Washington DC. He advised many of the world's leading companies on global expansion strategy and operations-design for new manufacturing, sourcing and marketing operations in key markets. In the travel & tourism sector, he has advised several companies including Taj, Oberoi, Shilla and Virgin Atlantic. His work on investment and competitiveness strategies for governments has spanned all sectors and regions - from high-tech to agribusiness, from Silicon Valley and Shanghai to Sierra Leone and South Sudan. He has worked on strategies to stimulate investment in the tourism sector in numerous countries including India, Mali, Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago, Uganda and Zambia. As a long-time proponent of private sector investment in Africa, he served as an advisor to the Commission for Africa, helped to design the Investment Climate Facility for Africa, and has advised several governments on their investment promotion strategies - including Cote d'Ivoire, Kenya, Mauritius, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. He has also advised numerous private clients on their Africa strategy - including leading firms in agribusiness, chemicals, financial services, tourism and knowledge services. He is particularly well-known for his work on the globalisation of the knowledge services sector. While Director of A.T. Kearney's GBPC, he designed and launched the Global Services Location Index, the premier global index of country attractiveness for IT, BPO and other knowledge services; and he played a key role in developing growth strategies for the IT and BPO sectors in Brazil, Chile, Dubai, Egypt, Malaysia, Mexico and Sri Lanka. Having lived and worked in more than 30 countries, Mr. Bell has been a frequent speaker at international conferences and a regular commentator on global trends in The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, The Financial Times, BusinessWeek, CNN, and other global and regional media. He is also author of several white-papers and reports on issues of globalisation, and serves on the Boards of various investment firms and industry organisations in South Asia and East Africa.
