U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron has instructed the Department for International Development to publish online all international development projects worth more than 500 pounds (USD732).
DfID responded with a pledge to publish detailed information about all of its projects online, with summary information in multiple languages, and solicit feedback from stakeholders on project performance.
Cameron, in a May 31 letter to all government departments, said published information should include financial details and project documentation.
“Greater transparency across Government is at the heart of our shared commitment to enable the public to hold politicians and public bodies to account; to reduce the deficit and deliver better value for money in public spending; and to realise significant economic benefits by enabling businesses and non-profit organisations to build innovative applications and websites using public data,” Cameron wrote.
As reported by Devex, the agreement between the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats calls for online publication of details on all U.K. aid spending.
Publish What You Fund, an initiative advocating greater aid transparency, welcomed Cameron’s move, noting that aid transparency is vital to enhancing aid effectiveness.
