U.N. Moves Back Afghanistan Staff

U.N. foreign staffers are back in Afghanistan to lend first-hand support to the organization’s mission in the country, Washington Post reports. The U.N. evacuated its foreign staff in Afghanistan to Dubai, following the targeted attack on a U.N. guesthouse in Kabul. There are currently a number of vacancies within the mission, the Washington Post notes, because a number of the staff resigned while some left after the end of their contracts.

Laos Gets Climate Change Boosts from ADB

The Asian Development Bank approved USD3.1 million worth of grants to boost climate change initiatives in Laos and help the country build its resilience to floods, droughts and similar extreme weather events. UN Agencies Vaccinate Afghan Children Against Polio

The U.N. Children’s Fund and World Health Organization aim to reach approximately 7.7 million children under the five living in Afghanistan with a new three-day polio vaccination campaign it organized with the country’s health ministry. Launched on March 14, the drive builds on several national immunization projects started by the two agencies in 2009 and a recent campaign in February 2010, which targeted some 2.8 children. USAID, Gorbachev Foundation Partner for Child Welfare
