The Afghan government’s decision to shut down 172 non-governmental organizations was “fair” and that the process used to identify which licenses to revoke was inclusive, according to the head of an NGO coordinating body in Afghanistan.
Laurent Sailard, director of the Agency Coordinating Body for Afghan Relief, told IRIN that the process was “extremely transparent.”
ACBAR is a consortium of more than 100 national and international NGOs established in 1988 to facilitate humanitarian aid coordination in Afghanistan.
The NGOs Clearance and Annulment Commission, meanwhile, said that most of the NGOs dissolved failed to submit six-monthly reports to the Ministry of Economy. Most were also believed to be dysfunctional and have already left Afghanistan without notifying the government.
