The United Nations must intensify efforts to help the international community meet the Millennium Development Goals and prove it is “not just a meeting place for diplomats,” Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said as the global body celebrates the 67th anniversary of its charter’s ratification today, Oct. 24.
This year’s celebration, themed “Solutions for a Prosperous World,” features events and activities that are meant to highlight the United Nations’ role and accomplishments in international development. It also underscores the need to not only achieve the MDGs by 2015 but also lay out a “bold and practical post-2015 development agenda.”
Among the events that will take place is a U.N.-hosted concert featuring Stevie Wonder to be held at the global body’s headquarters in New York. The U.N. Association of the United States of America, meanwhile, is holding more than 170 events around the United States.
