Two grants await African scientists whose research focus on water and sanitation, renewable energy, and soil.
The grants are part of the Africa Capacity Building Initiative, a joint program by the U.K. Royal Society and the Department for International Development. The initiative aims to strengthen the research capacity of scientists from universities and research institutions in sub-Saharan Africa.
The initiative is open to scientists who have a PhD or same-level “extensive research experience,” have trained students taking master’s or doctoral degrees, and have been published in national and international journals. Interested applicants should also be based in the initiative’s 48 eligible countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
Grants will include research and laboratory equipment expenses, travel and subsistence costs, and training.
Successful applicants will initially be given up to 25,000 pounds ($39,000) to form a research consortium. This should include at least one U.K. and three African laboratories to qualify for the program grants, which can reach up to 1.2 million pounds over a five-year period.
Applications for the first grant will be on Nov. 1. The second grant will open late 2013.
