The U.S. has selected eight nations to receive additional technical and management resources under its Global Health Initiative. The eight GHI Plus beneficiaries include Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Nepal and Rwanda.
The U.S. will help these countries quickly implement activities in the areas of infectious diseases, maternal and child health, family planning, and health systems activities.
By late summer of 2010, the U.S. hopes to release the final version of the “Implementation of the Global Health Initiative: Consultation Document,” which includes feedback from the U.S. Congress, partner countries, civil society organizations, donors and governments, private sector, and multilateral and international institutions regarding the execution of GHI.
The USD63 billion initiative is being led by an operations committee that includes U.S. Agency for International Development Administrator Rajiv Shah, U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator Eric Goosby and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Thomas Frieden.
The GHI Strategic Council, meanwhile, provides high-level policy support, advice and guidance on the implementation of the initiative. The council comprises representatives from USAID, the Health and Human Services, Defense, and Treasury departments, the Millennium Challenge Corp., and the Peace Corps.
