A new fund that explores under-researched issues in development is seeking for proposals under the themes of urbanization and disability.

The U.K. Department for International Development and the Economic and Social Research Council are providing millions for three research themes under the Joint Fund for Poverty Alleviation Research.

Up to 3.3 million pounds are available for research that provides linkage between urbanization and disaster risk in Africa. Such information would help inform governments how to manage such risks and help shape donor agencies and nongovernmental organizations’ resilience programs.

Another 2 million pounds are available for research exploring emerging challenges in reducing poverty in urban settings.

Proposals tackling specific barriers to inclusion facing people with disability, such as in health and education, and how to overcome them are also wanted and could receive as much as 2 million pounds.

The inclusion of people with disability in the wider development agenda has been a hot topic recently, research from ODI noting how improvement of data collection could better address this problem.

The call for proposals is open to researchers and organizations inside and outside the United Kingdom.
