INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS

Through our partnerships with many other Red Cross Red Crescent National Societies around the world, we work to promote safer, healthier and more sustainable lives for people in developing countries, particularly in the Asia Pacific region.

Placing people at the heart of our work, we help to build resilient communities by strengthening National Society partners in their planning for effective disaster preparedness, and in their response and early recovery capacity.

We are also increasing our commitment to health programming (including water, sanitation, community health and HIV) in the Asia Pacific region.

 

DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS

Australian Red Cross is committed to building healthier and safer communities. Placing people at the heart of our work, we help to create resilient communities and build strong regional Red Cross partners.

The majority of our international programs are run in the Asia Pacific region. This diverse region is home to almost two thirds of the world's population. It is prone to natural disasters and has areas of entrenched poverty and disadvantage.

• Asia region. Our programs in the Asia region focus on community health, preparing for and recovering from disasters and developing the skills of our regional partners.
• Pacific region. Working with our Pacific Red Cross partners, Australian Red Cross is helping to build community health, access to clean water and sanitation, and working with communities -- alongside trained volunteers -- to prepare for and respond to disasters.

 

EMERGENCY RELIEF

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is a lead player in responding to disasters wherever they occur around the globe.

Australian Red Cross, through its links with the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, plays a major role in that response.

• Emergency water and sanitation. As part of the Red Cross Movement, Australian Red Cross provides technical assistance in emergency water and sanitation to countries affected by disaster. This includes sending water and sanitation specialists, equipment, and conducting training in preparation for emergency response.
• Emergency shelter. As part of the Red Cross Movement, Australian Red Cross provides technical assistance in emergency shelter to countries affected by disaster. This includes sending shelter specialists, shelter materials, conducting training in preparation for emergency response, and participating in shelter coordination forums.
• Health and nutrition. As part of the Red Cross Movement, Australian Red Cross provides technical assistance in emergency health and nutrition to countries affected by disaster. This includes sending health and nutrition specialists, and conducting training in preparation for emergency response. Australian Red Cross works with ICRC to implement a nutrition program in Sudan for malnourished children. Australian Red Cross works with IFRC to implement a health and care program in Afghanistan.
• Relief supplies. During disaster, Australian Red Cross stands ready to support Red Cross National Societies with relief supplies. Australian Red Cross has prepositioned an emergency stock for this purpose.

Australian Red Cross offers a range of high-quality training courses to educate the public, help prepare new aid workers and international volunteers, and build the skills of practitioners here and in the field.
