Job Title: 2 consultants for Hydrogeological assessment

Position Type (full/part time): Consultancy

Duration/Level of Effort (long/short term): short term

Position Location (e.g. city, country, remote): 10 days in Libya – and 10 days for desktop research and report writing

SUMMARY OF THE PROJECT

Rising levels of groundwater in Zliten are causing an emergency affecting over 2000 households and causing significant health risks due to stagnant water and insect proliferation.

SUMMARY OF THE POSITION

We are currently looking for 2 consultants to conduct a hydrogeological assessment and provide options for practical solutions.

Hydrogeologists commonly use a combination of fieldwork, laboratory testing, and computer modelling to understand how water moves through the ground and interacts with rock and soil formations. This knowledge is used to help determine where groundwater supplies are located and how they can best be accessed for human use.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Field investigation and desktop study

- Detailed assessment of the current situation. This includes:

· The ability to conduct geological surveys, including mapping rocks, minerals, or other materials found in the earth´s surface layers, analysing samples to determine chemical composition, and identifying potential hazards such as earthquake faults or sinkholes.

· Formulating ToR for environmental impact assessments to evaluate the potential effects on the population living in the surrounding areas.

· Formulating ToR for laboratory analyses of water samples to identify the presence of contaminants such as arsenic, lead, nitrates, pesticides, bacteria, and petroleum products.

- Conceptual hydrogeological model responding to the crisis entailing short, medium, and long-term solutions. This includes:

· Developing strategies for remediation of contamination problems.

· Identification of the parties responsible for the implementation of the proposed solutions.

· Preparing written reports on the findings and presenting them along with recommendations to the EU Delegation to Libya and possibly to other International Development Partners and Libyan stakeholders.

· Attending technical coordination meetings as per demand of the EU Delegation and generally assisting and providing technical advice and expertise to the EU Delegation on this subject when required”.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education:

· Expert 1: At least a Master´s degree in geology, hydrogeology, or any related field/ Disaster Risk Reduction Management is a plus.

· Expert 2: A Bachelor´s degree in geology, hydrogeology or related field. Educational background in Disaster Risk Management is a plus.

Minimum Experience:

· Expert 1 :

    • At least 10 years of professional experience in hydrogeological field. Experience in Disaster Risk Reduction Management is a plus.
    • Strong understanding of geological principles and processes.
    • Proven experience in preparing hydrogeological assessments
    • Knowledge of the hydrogeological context in Libya is highly desirable
    • Experience with drilling, sampling, and testing groundwater wells
    • Proficient in ArcGIS, AutoCAD, and other relevant software programs
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Fluency in English, Arabic language is a plus

· Expert 2:

o A Bachelor´s degree in geology, hydrogeology or related field. Educational background in Disaster Risk Management is a plus.

o 5+ years of professional experience as a hydrogeologist. Experience in Disaster Risk Management is a plus

o Strong understanding of geological principles and processes

o Strong knowledge and understanding of the hydrogeological context in Libya is a must

o Proven experience in supporting hydrogeological assessments

o Proficiency in ArcGIS, AutoCAD, and other relevant software programs

o Excellent written and verbal communication skills

o Fluency in English and Arabic
