2026 Summer Intern, Energy Engineer

Are you a student seeking experience with energy analytics, forecasting, and research that shapes future energy efficiency programs? Do you have strong communication skills, enjoy working with data, and want to learn how to turn technical insights into actionable strategies? Do you thrive in collaborative teams where you help connect research, modeling, and reporting to deliver quality outcomes? If so, then you have found the perfect internship!

Join us as a 2026 Summer Intern to support our growing portfolio of work with utility companies. You will help build and validate datasets, test tools that estimate savings, and contribute to research that informs portfolio planning and measure development. Working closely with consultants and engineers, you will support standardized QA processes, document assumptions, and assist in creating clear summaries of projected impacts. Your work will help utilities plan cost effective programs, improve grid reliability, and deliver equitable savings for customers including underserved communities.

This is an entry-level, 10-week, full time internship that begins in early June 2026. The work may be fully remote from any U.S. location or hybrid from an ICF office depending on individual’s location. At this time, we are unable to provide relocation nor housing assistance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Developing and improving standardized quality assurance processes for potential study models
  • Testing and refining AI agents developed to improve potential study measure processes
  • Supporting emerging technology research, improving cost and savings estimates, and identifying new opportunities for potential studies and pilot programs
  • Interpretation, collation, and input of technical reference document data into cloud-based platforms and/or active ICF projects
  • Expanding research and knowledge base for key focus areas (e.g., data centers, measure costs) across the team

Basic Qualifications

  • By start date, a minimum of 30 completed college-level credit hours is required, preferably in engineering, building science, or related field
  • Must be able to pass any required background check(s), which may include drug screening
  • Candidate must be a US citizen, reside in the U.S., be authorized to work in the U.S., and all work must be performed in the U.S. per contract requirements

Preferred Skills/Qualifications

  • Demonstrates trustworthiness and upholds the highest ethical standards
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
  • A completed bachelor’s degree plus enrollment verification in a Master’s degree program within mechanical engineering or similar discipline
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills, including knowledge of basic programming
  • A passion for the energy industry, with specific interest in energy efficiency and distributed energy resources.
  • Advanced proficiency in utilizing Microsoft Excel for organizing and processing data, creating tools, and conducting analysis
  • Experience with energy modeling tools (e.g., OpenStudio, EnergyPlus)
  • Ensures that information flows effectively to others
  • Identifies, collects, and analyzes the information needed to solve a problem effectively
  • Strong writing and communication skills, and ability to organize written work in a manner that is clear, easy to follow, and tailored for the intended audience.
