Job Description

AI Governance Intern – Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT)

Work Location: Remote
Expected Duration: 6 months

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research on AI policy, legal compliance, and Humanitarian Law to support the development of UN-wide policies
  • Analyze the Generative AI landscape, supply chain dynamics, technology trends, and relevant use cases to inform strategic initiatives
  • Assist in formulating and implementing AI governance frameworks aligned with international standards and best practices
  • Support the development of Responsible AI guidelines and protocols, with a focus on privacy compliance and ethical considerations

Required Skills:

  • Experience in information research, policy development, or legal compliance, particularly in Humanitarian Law and privacy issues
  • Strong understanding of trends in Generative AI, its ecosystem, and practical applications
  • Technical proficiency in Python and familiarity with common AI and data analytics libraries

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in International Relations, Law, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Experience in conducting policy assessments, drafting reports, and presenting findings to diverse stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and collaborate effectively in a multicultural environment

Qualifications/Special Skills:

  • Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
    • Enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent or higher)
    • Enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent)
  • No professional experience is required, but relevant training, coursework, or skills should benefit the United Nations during the internship
  • Selected candidates will be contacted directly by the hiring manager for further consideration

Languages:

  • Fluency in English is required
  • Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable

The Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT) leads the UN’s digital transformation, enabling a more sustainable future through secure and innovative solutions. The Policy, Strategy and Governance Division under OICT delivers responsible and ethical AI solutions across the Secretariat. This internship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the implementation of Responsible AI controls aligned with the UN’s mandate. Interns will work closely with UN subject matter experts and contribute to research, compliance assessments, and development of operational AI guardrails.

Visa and Work Authorization Requirements (for U.S.-based Internships):

  • Non-U.S. citizens or residents must obtain a G4 visa to intern in the United States
  • Interns must ensure they have valid visa status and employment authorization (CPT/OPT/AT) before beginning the internship

Intern-Specific Terms:

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. All costs related to travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or their sponsoring institution. Interns may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization. Successful candidates should confirm visa requirements before accepting an offer.
