Location: Pretoria, South Africa (hybrid)

Reports to: Communications and Events Manager

Stipend: R9000/mo

Apprenticeship Overview:

This apprenticeship offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in communications and events management within the international development sector. Working under the direct supervision of the Communications and Events Manager, the apprentice will contribute to implementing strategic communication initiatives and assist in organizing impactful events for the USAID Southern Africa Regional Environment Adapting and Learning (REAL) Activity.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Communications Support:

  • Assist in developing and executing communication strategies and frameworks to convey program objectives and outcomes.
  • Help create content, including:
    • Reports, newsletters, articles, and fact sheets.
    • Blogs, social media posts, and press releases.
    • Presentation materials and other external communication tools.
  • Collaborate in producing a biweekly or monthly regional digest to disseminate information among stakeholders.
  • Support in maintaining an up-to-date activity database to track environment and energy activities across the region.

2. Event Coordination:

  • Contribute to the planning and executing workshops, conferences, retreats, and learning events.
  • Assist in sourcing and liaising with service providers and venues.
  • Support event logistics, including scheduling, participant coordination, and set-up.
  • Collaborate with the Finance and Operations Manager to track event budgets and prepare financial reports.

3. General Support:

  • Provide administrative and logistical assistance to the Communications and Events Manager and the rest of the team.
  • Conduct research and compile data relevant to communications and event initiatives.
  • Coordinate with team members to ensure alignment on project deliverables.

Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a relevant program (e.g., Communications, International Development, Public Relations, or related field).
  • Strong writing, editing, and research skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Familiarity with design tools (e.g., Canva) is a plus.
  • Interest in international development and/or environmental and energy issues.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a remote team environment.
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills with attention to detail.
  • Based in Pretoria, South Africa.
