For more than 45 years, JSI has provided high-quality technical and managerial assistance to public health and education programs worldwide. JSI’s Center for Digital Health (CDH) and EdTech Center (ETC) both support our work to identify, adapt, and apply appropriate, innovative, and effective technology to improve public health and equitable education programs across the globe. We help projects ensure success by promoting best practices in:
- Digital Health: Our portfolio of work spans the strategic application of technology to solve health challenges, including improved health service delivery, health information management systems, information sharing and use, community education and mobilization, identity and registration, supply chains and logistics, surveillance, and mapping. The CDH sees digital solutions as tools to solve problems, and we are dedicated to supporting our colleagues and clients to leverage these solutions to solve public health challenges.
- Educational Technology: We work to advance digital equity so everyone can thrive in today’s increasingly tech-enabled world. We support diverse organizations and communities to leverage technology to increase the reach and impact of education, economic strengthening, and other humanitarian initiatives.
- As Artificial Intelligence Advisor, you will be responsible for providing strategic guidance and expertise in the assessment, implementation, use, and evaluation of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies within and across our organization including the two Centers above, but also corporate operations, other technical centers, etc. You will play a critical role in identifying opportunities for AI integration in public health and education projects, creating AI-driven solutions, and supporting the development and application of AI algorithms to enhance health and educational outcomes. Your innovative mindset, technical expertise, and deep understanding of public health and education challenges will be essential in shaping our AI-driven initiatives.
- This position is a U.S. based hire and the preference is for the successful candidate to be based in Boston or Washington, D.C., but the following locations are acceptable based on JSI’s registration: AZ, AR, CA, CO, FL, GA, IL, LA, ME, MA, MD, MI, MN, NH, NJ, NM, NY, NC, PA, RI, TN, TX, USVI, VT, VA, WA, WI, and Washington, D.C.

Specific responsibilities of the AI Advisor fall within five broad categories:
1.
Policy and Compliance.
- The AI Advisor will oversee and advance AI policy and compliance across the organization to ensure that we are compliant with the law and best practices in the area of this emerging technology. Illustrative activities include:
- Strategic AI Integration: Collaborate with senior leadership and project teams to assess the potential benefits and risks of integrating AI technologies into public health and education programs and initiatives. Provide strategic recommendations to align AI-driven projects with organizational goals and priorities.
- Innovation and Research: Stay abreast of the latest developments in AI technologies, public health, and education research. Proactively explore and propose novel AI-driven approaches to address emerging health and education challenges.
2.
Technical Work:
- The AI Advisor will advance the appropriate use of AI tools across the organization. Illustrative activities include:
- AI Solution Development: Lead the design and development of AI-based solutions, predictive models, use cases, and decision support systems to address health and education challenges. Ensure that these solutions adhere to ethical and privacy standards and comply with relevant regulatory requirements.
- Landscaping: Assess how JSI and its competitors are using AI in their technical work to frame internal investments and programmatic interventions.
- Data Analysis and Modeling: Use large-scale datasets and conduct advanced data analysis to uncover patterns, trends, and insights relevant to health and education domains. Apply machine learning and statistical techniques to build predictive models and enhance evidence-based decision-making processes.
- Algorithm Support: Support the adoption of appropriate algorithms into our work (whether developed by internal teams or external vendors) to ensure secure and unbiased data use.
3.
Training:
- The AI Advisor will provide training around the use of AI tools and leverage the experience of JSI staff to advance AI across the organization. Illustrative activities include:
- Training and Capacity Building: Conduct workshops, training sessions, and knowledge-sharing activities to empower staff with AI skills and ensure the successful integration of AI solutions into public health and education projects.
4.
Evaluation:
- Given the rapidly changing nature of AI, the AI Advisor will review the progress of institutional use and performance to support continuous improvement. Illustrative activities include:
- Performance Evaluation: Develop and implement performance metrics to evaluate the effectiveness and impact of AI-driven projects, providing actionable insights for continuous improvement.
5.
Other Duties as Needed:
- The AI Advisor will support the use of AI as a tool to advance JSI’s mission. Illustrative activities include:
- Lead the AI Working Group: Coordinate and advance AI activities across the organization.
- Proposals: Support the inclusion of AI-driven strategies and approaches that can enhance JSIs proposals.
- Other duties as defined.
Applicants for this position should possess the following qualifications:
- Educational Background: A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field. A strong background in AI in the context of public health or education is preferred.
- Experience: At least 5 years of relevant experience in developing and implementing AI or Machine Learning solutions, preferably in the context of public health or education.
- Technical Expertise: Proficiency in AI and machine learning techniques, including natural language processing, image recognition, predictive modeling, and data mining. Experience with programming languages such as Python, R, and familiarity with relevant libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, Keras, scikit-learn) is desirable.
- Domain Knowledge: A deep understanding of public health and/or education challenges is highly desirable.
- Ethics and Compliance: Knowledge of ethical considerations related to AI applications in health and education, and compliance with data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA).
- Innovation and Problem-Solving: Proven ability to think creatively, identify opportunities, and design innovative AI-driven solutions for complex public health and education challenges.
- Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders effectively. Fluency in English is essential for effective communication and collaboration in our diverse and global work environment.
- Leadership and Collaboration: Strong leadership skills with a collaborative approach to work, and able to influence and work effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Adaptability: Ability to thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, adapting to evolving technological and public health and education trends.
- Initiative and Organization: Strong project management and time management skills, highly organized and detail-oriented, able to work independently, take responsibility, and follow through on assignments.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally 15% as necessary.
