Job Description

Job Summary:

Drexel University seeks an ambitious, resourceful, highly skilled, and adaptable professional to serve as Associate Director of the GENTE Environmental Stewardship Jobs Program. The GENTE Environmental Stewardship Jobs Program is an environmental program designed to strengthen conservation strategies, research partnerships, training and job opportunities at two key protected areas in EG: Gran Caldera Scientific Reserve and Monte Alén National Park.

The Guinea Ecuatorial - Naturaleza, Turismo y Educación (GENTE) Consortium is led by Drexel University. Its mission is to provide interconnected educational and biodiversity conservation solutions to benefit the people of Equatorial Guinea (EG) by increasing national human capacity and protecting national biodiversity. These proposed interconnected solutions will also provide a foundation for a tourism and hospitality industry that will help to diversify the country’s petroleum-based economy.

The Associate Director will manage and will have overall operational responsibility for the Environmental Stewardship Jobs Program This position is based at Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA. Major responsibilities include management of the conservation and sustainable livelihoods programs; development of budgets and financial tracking; implementation of organizational policies and procedures; communications with team members, consortium members, boards and councils; and preparation of outcome evaluations.

The Associate Director will participate with the Executive Director in strategic planning, program innovation and growth management. The successful candidate should have outstanding organizational and management skills with experience working at the national and international level, either in the public or private sectors.

Essential Functions:

• Manage GENTE Environmental Stewardship Jobs Program in US and EG

• Work with Executive Director to ensure ongoing excellence in programming, finance and administration, communications, and systems management.

• Work with Executive Director to ensure ongoing excellence in programming, finance and administration, communications, and systems management.

• Support work of an Environmental Stewardship Council, including coordinating programmatic efforts, succession planning, resource provisioning, and communications.

• Manage GENTE Consortium partners and members and recruit new members.

• Conduct strategic planning to ensure that the organization achieves its mission and is making consistent and timely progress.

• Ensure effective systems to track scaling progress, and regularly evaluate program components to ensure they remain within the contractual guidelines of the GENTE Environmental Stewardship Jobs Program.

Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

Master’s Degree, Wildlife management, natural resources management, sustainable development, environmental sciences or a related discipline. At least 3 years Professional experience.

Other Requirements:

• MA/MS, MBA, or PhD or equivalent or equivalent experience in wildlife management, natural resources management, sustainable development, environmental sciences or a related discipline.
• At least 3 years of professional experience in wildlife conservation management and/or sustainable livelihoods program management.
• Advanced project management skills and abilities; understanding project goals and objectives and ability to develop team, tools, practices, tracking and communication systems to successfully execute same; ability to recognize and overcome program challenges.
• Strong ability to set priorities and manage workflow to fulfill objectives and goals according to deadlines in a fast-paced work environment with diverse and dispersed groups of people.
• Ability to implement an entrepreneurial approach to strategy and tasks - equally adept at working alone, in small working groups, and effectively across a distributed, virtual team by establishing and maintaining cooperative relationships.
• Understanding of monitoring and evaluation approaches for conservation and development programs.
• Ability to write and speak Spanish.
• Willingness to travel for extended periods in Equatorial Guinea and other countries as needed to fulfill GENTE Consortium objectives.
• Experience working with NGO and governmental organizations.
• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills to accurately and effectively communicate to a wide spectrum of professionals and experts such as staff, local stake holders, potential donors, and conservation and sustainable livelihoods professionals in a diverse working environment.
• Public speaking, including ability to represent program in front of large audiences.
• Advanced skills with Microsoft Office Suite - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
• Advanced skills and experience working with complex budgets and financial projections.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Project Management Professional Certification (PMP) or willing to become certified.
• Demonstrated team management skills; problem solving, multi-tasking, accountability, including working as part of a project team and recognizing partner needs.
• Experience with creating effective reports for funding agencies and partners, such as demonstrated writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
• Verbal and written competency in Spanish.
• Experience living, working or traveling in Equatorial Guinea or nearby countries.
• Previous work experience or engagement with communities in EG and/or sector agencies (including INDEFOR-AP [Instituto Nacional de Desarrollo Forestal y Manejo del Sistema de Áreas Protegidas], Ministry of Tourism) on conservation or sustainable development issues.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people in a multi-cultural, multi-interest, multi-ethnic environment.
• Detail-oriented and with ability to multi-task under limited supervision.
