The Hague Institute for Innovation of Law (HiiL) is a civil society organisation committed to closing the justice gap and enhancing access to justice through innovation. We’re looking for an English speaking Best Practices Justice Sector Advisor, who develops and advises justice sector organisations in implementing evidence based practices.

As our Best Practices - Justice Sector Advisor, you support the work in Anglophone Africa by developing guidelines on Best Practices in the justice sector. This includes the development of outcome monitoring and tools, developing guidelines, implementation plans and conducting research on knowledge gaps for the most pressing justice problems. To implement this, you will work closely with the organisations of justice practitioners, including judges, lawyers, prosecutors, social workers and providers of informal justice. The Justice Sector Advisor also contributes to developing and executing integrated people-centred justice guidelines and monitoring tools for justice practitioners.

HiiL has ongoing people-centred justice programmes in a number of countries across Anglophone Africa. An important element of these programmes includes developing Best Practice guidelines in the justice sector. Working closely with other work streams in the team, the Justice Sector Advisor is able to coordinate work independently consulting other experts as required.

How will you contribute to our mission:

  • You are responsible to develop plans for the implementation of Best Practices Guidelines for programmes in Anglophone Africa, applying implementation science insights to the justice sector where best practices still need to be developed.
  • You contribute to exploring and developing approaches to stimulate informal justice providers to work with guidelines, best practices as well as to collect data about the way best practices are implemented and increase effectiveness, in close collaboration with our national team.
  • You ensure that implementation plans are co-created with stakeholders with realistic commitments to improve.
  • You keep up-to-date with emerging and trending best practices in methodology, processes and tools. You will proactively contribute to the HiiL Practice related to Best Practices, and apply knowledge gained in programmes.
  • You contribute to a positive team environment, in which team work is valued, a difference in cultural backgrounds is respected, and the skills of each team member are recognized and leveraged to its full potential.

What we look for in a new colleague:

  • Holds a Master’s degree in a relevant social science field.
  • Has +5 years of relevant work experience in a similar position, preferably in an international, non-profit environment.
  • Has experience in working in an international NGO executing programmes, preferably on rule of law topics.
  • Is knowledgeable and/or has experience working in Global South contexts.
  • Is results-oriented, analytical, and adaptable.
  • Has full professional proficiency in English with excellent written and presentation skills.
  • Has experience in and/or strong interest in working in an international environment, and is willing to travel to the region frequently.
  • Possesses excellent interpersonal skills, is proactive and hands-on.
  • Is eager to grow, and has a can-do mindset.
  • Is holding EU-citizenship or NL working permit.

What else:

  • Starting date: January 2024 ( or in mutual agreement);
  • An initial period of 12 months, aiming to build a long-term work relationship;
  • A monthly salary for a full-time working week between €3.600,-/ €4.350,- based on relevant experience;
  • Up to 8 weeks of holidays when working full time;
  • Pension coverage by ABP Pension Fund;
  • Company laptop and a NS card for commuting.
