Job Description

The Population Reference Bureau (PRB) provides objective, reliable, data-driven information on population trends and their implications for society and policy. PRB seeks a creative, collaborative, and detail-oriented associate editor to join our award-winning Communications & Marketing Department in the Washington, D.C. office.

Reporting to the editorial director, the associate editor will apply his or her skills to a wide variety of content, including reports, briefs, blog posts, web articles, newsletters, data sheets, and marketing collateral. The associate editor will also take part in planning and execution of content dissemination through multiple channels, including through social media platforms, as well as conduct general administrative functions within the department.

Responsibilities:

Editorial (75%)

  • Perform both substantive editing and copyediting on PRB publications and digital content.
  • Write content summary texts such as web landing pages and key messages.
  • Assist in production planning and management for publications.
  • Manage the PRB Blog production schedule and work with staff on blog posts.
  • Ensure adherence to PRB style and quality standards in print and digital products.
  • Conduct quality checks on PRB products.
  • Manage content rights and use permission requests.

Marketing, Dissemination, and Administration (25%)

  • Support development of dissemination strategies, including development of key messages from content products.
  • Manage inventories of PRB promotional materials; explore new ideas for promotional materials.
  • Support preparations for events and conferences, such as at the Population Association of America annual meeting.
  • Assist with publications management for PRB’s publications room, PRB meeting spaces, production files, and PRB inventory.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree; English or Communications degree preferred.
  • Strong and demonstrated editorial and writing skills.
  • At least three years of related experience in an editorial or communications department, ideally in a mission-driven non-profit, think tank, or data/research organization.
  • Experience editing data and graphic-rich content.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate well with project staff during the editing process.
  • A keen, careful editorial eye and the ability to spot minor errors and inconsistencies, as well as strong organizational, proofreading, writing, and editing skills.
  • The ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks, while ensuring editorial quality.
  • A firm grasp of English grammar and punctuation rules and the ability to read, analyze, and interpret research reports is a must; Knowledge of AP style a plus.
  • Energetic and highly organized.
  • Must have: Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office suite and editing in Adobe Acrobat.
  • Pluses: Knowledge of web content management systems; Knowledge and experience with online marketing and social media; Knowledge of HTML.
  • Knowledge of French helpful.
