The Opportunity
We are seeking a successful leader to join our team as Chief Financial Officer based in either Uganda or Kenya. This new, high-level role will not only oversee the financial management of Living Goods, but will also vision and reshape the finance department to best meet the future needs of the rapidly expanding organization. Over the next few years, we anticipate exponential growth, a shift towards bilateral agency funding and a migration to more robust and versatile systems.
The CFO will report to the Living Goods President, and will also partner closely with the senior leadership and the Board of Directors to develop and implement strategies across the organization.
The ideal candidate is a dynamic leader with entrepreneurial spirit and a proven track record of delivering results at a senior level. This post will be located in Nairobi, Kenya or Kampala, Uganda at the discretion of the candidate. The position will require international travel.
Core Job Responsibilities
- Oversee all finance, accounting, audit and budgeting functions for Living Goods globally.
- Contribute to the overall strategy of Living Goods as a key member of the senior leadership team.
- Advise on and guide proposals and negotiations for bilateral and multilateral aid agency grants and contracts.
- Lead grant/contract management, accounting and reporting on bilateral and multilateral funding. Build Living Goods’ human capacity, policies and systems regarding the support of such funding.
- Represent the organization with funders, partners and governments.
- Envision, expand and organize the Finance department to best meet the future needs of our rapidly expanding organization.
- Supervise, develop and expand a team of (presently eight) finance professionals located in Kampala and Nairobi. In particular, mentor and empower the successful current Finance Department lead.
- Assess the organization’s current financial systems. As necessary, create and implement a plan to strengthen these systems.
- Oversee the timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements.
- Under the direction of the Audit Committee of the Board, support the annual global audit of the organization and be the lead liaison with external auditors.
- Oversee budget planning and cost management.
- Lead the financial modelling, planning, forecasting and analysis for the organization.
- Ensure robust and effective internal controls.
- Ensure legal and regulatory compliance of all financial functions. Ensure Living Goods is also compliant with the requirements of its funders.
- Maintain knowledge of financial and accounting best practices, the evolving regulatory environment and related developments affecting the non-profit and social enterprise sectors.
Qualifications
- Previous CFO experience and a minimum of ten years of highly successful experience in Finance leadership roles in the non-profit/social enterprise sector, and ideally in the private sector too. Several years of experience in developing countries.
- Substantial knowledge and experience of bilateral aid agency grant/contract management, accounting, reporting and compliance.
- CPA certification. Undergraduate degree in Finance, or a related field. An MBA is a plus.
- Desire and ability to build the new CFO position into a key leadership role within a rapidly expanding and fast-paced global organization.
- Track record of effective engagement with senior executives and senior internal and external stakeholders.
- Strong analytical skills and successful experience translating a strategic vision into an effective operational model.
- Experience establishing and working with ERP systems.
- Leadership and entrepreneurial abilities.
- A staunch commitment to quality and excellence.
- Willingness to be based in either Kampala or Nairobi, and to travel internationally.
