The Communications Program Director is responsible for all Pulte Institute communications, engagement, and outreach efforts. The position creates systems and structures within the Pulte Institute to manage all communications activity within the communications team. This includes Pulte strategic communications, the Pulte Institute Website, drafting and editing written materials, including articles, newsletters, press releases, speeches, and promotional materials. It also includes planning Pulte Institute events and providing strategic direction for outreach with external partners, including media, federal agencies, donors, private sector partners, and implementing partners.

The position develops and leads the communications data systems and strategy, manages internal communications process within the Pulte Institute, and directs the communications team to implement communications deliverables. The Communications Program Director will also work closely with Pulte Institute Division Directors and program staff to develop strategic communications plans for research projects, highlighting both rigorous academic research and global impact of Pulte Institute programs. Key to this position is the alignment of the Pulte Institute’s overarching strategic research themes, policy focus areas, and Pulte Institute communications and outreach activities.

The position requires exceptional organizational and communication skills, the ability to create systems and structure, excellent English writing and editing, creative problem solving skills, and the ability to produce high-quality material with little direction. Strategic leadership and an outgoing personality is required to provide proactive communications and content to coordinate the Pulte Institute’s outreach efforts closely with faculty and the Keough School of Global Affairs.

Website Content and Writing:

• Writes, edits, and manages the review process for communications materials, including website content, press releases, feature stories, event marketing, and other outreach pieces promoting the teaching, research, and scholarship of the Pulte Institute and faculty collaborators.

• Write strategic outreach pieces, such as the annual review that communicates the Pulte Institute’s research and its impact in the world.

• Supports the editing of research staff and faculty publications, proposals, policy briefs, and other research products, including for externally funded federal grants.

Strategy:

• Applies advanced communications knowledge to complex strategy decisions that ultimately enhance the reputation of the Pulte Institute as a leader in poverty and inequality research, policy, and practice at Notre Dame and beyond.

• Develops and manages the communications strategy for Pulte Institute outreach, including communications budgets, goals, and procedures.

• Supervises two Pulte communications staff and works with Pulte Institute and Keough School leadership to design dissemination strategies for high-profile grant program and research activities.

• Assigns, monitors, and tracks metrics for the work of the Communications Team to deliver strategy tactics, products, and other content.

External Relations:

• Provides expert communication knowledge to internal and external partnerships.

• Works closely with Pulte Institute leadership to develop messaging, campaigns, events, and presentations for and in collaboration with partners (e.g. Federal agencies, donors, private sector organizations, and Notre Dame partners).

• Maintains a system of regular contact to stakeholders through Pulte Institute highlights/updates; works with the Keough School of Global Affairs and media relations to promote Pulte Institute related news articles, events, projects, and research as applicable.

Internal Communications Processes:

• Oversees the creation and implementation of all communications processes for the Pulte Institute, including contact databases, impact and publication reporting, and other outreach metrics.

• The Communications Program Director uses advanced industry knowledge to troubleshoot and creatively resolve complex problems.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree.

• Collaborative work ethic and high degree of independence and initiative required.

• Potential travel.

• Strong oral and written skills.

• Strong experience with Microsoft Office and advanced word processing.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Strong experience in communications. Experience in writing, event marketing, and communications strategy. Higher education or other nonprofit communications experience.

• Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to interact professionally and build capacity among colleagues from culturally diverse backgrounds and in different settings.

• Exceptional English writing and editing skills required.

• Strong experience with Associated Press Style, Chicago Style, and APA Style.
