Job Description

The Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) Program is a US Agency for International Development (USAID) funded project that supports the collection and use of demographic and health data through nationally representative population and facility-based surveys in low- and middle-income countries. The DHS Program data are collected to be used to improve health and wellbeing in survey countries. As part of the Communications Team at The DHS Program, the Data Dissemination Specialist works to increase access to and use of DHS Program data to improve national and subnational public health program planning. The Data Dissemination Specialist works closely with other teams at The DHS Program, USAID Missions, National Statistics Offices, Ministries of Health, and other survey implementing agencies to support and develop tailored plans to: disseminate DHS Program data in-person and virtually; translate DHS Program results into a variety of accessible and practical formats; and facilitate use of data for evidence-based planning, program management, and advocacy among diverse audiences in the survey country. In addition to working at the national and subnational levels in survey countries, the Communications Team works to reach diverse global-level data users including program managers, journalists, researchers, policymakers, professors, and students. The Data Dissemination Specialist has an active role in collaborating with these global-level data users and will also apply a data-informed approach to improve data availability and use of the DHS Program suite of digital tools (website, dataset archive, STATcompiler, mobile application, Tableau dashboards, User Forum, social media channels, blog, YouTube, Application Programming Interface, Spatial Data Repository, Learning Hub, and Code Share Library on GitHub) among global level audiences.

Responsibilities:

• Provide in-person and virtual technical assistance to survey implementing agencies, ministries of health, and other groups in the areas of data interpretation, data visualization, and writing about survey results for specific target audiences
• Create accurate user-friendly dissemination materials including survey summary reports, fact sheets, PowerPoint presentations, and infographics to increase data use for decision making to improve programs and policies in survey countries
• Serve as co-trainer/co-facilitator for a variety of data use capacity strengthening activities including data use for decision making, social media, data visualization, and journalist workshops.
• Work closely with national organizations and cooperating agencies to foster country ownership of survey data and increase its use, by strengthening counterparts’ capacity to lead or co-facilitate data use activities
• Translate DHS Program data and common indicators into a variety of user-friendly products for global audiences including dashboards, videos, analytical briefs, blogs, social media campaigns, and eLearning courses.

Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in public health, international development, or related field
• Strong understanding of demographic and/or health survey data, including basic statistics and common global health indicators
• Skilled at reading and interpreting data tables and extracting key results that are relevant and important to health program managers
• Adept at translating survey results into written and visual data stories for both technical and non-technical audiences
• 2+ years of experience in communication or data dissemination with global health and/or population focus
• Demonstrated experience distilling complex public health data into visual representations
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office including data visualization/graphics creation in PowerPoint/Excel
• Experience training or facilitating workshops, particularly in DHS Program survey countries
• Excellent English written and oral communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in multicultural situations
• Excellent organization skills and attention to detail
• Proven ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize work, work well under pressure, and meet deadlines
• Ability to work independently and manage projects daily with minimal supervision
• Ability to travel internationally up to 30%

Preferred Qualifications:

• Proficiency in French, Spanish, Portuguese, or Arabic
• Knowledge of Tableau, Power BI, or other data visualization or digital storytelling software
• Knowledge of Adobe software (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects), Canva, or other design or video editing software
• Substantive experience working and/or living in a DHS Program survey country
