Job Description
The Deputy Country Director (“DCD”) will work closely with the Country Director (“CD”) in managing Axios’ operations and interests in Nigeria, but with a particular and strong external focus on the needs and interests of Axios’ clients and stakeholders in Nigeria. The first objective of this external focus will be to deepen Axios’ understanding of the strategic needs of its clients, and to better respond to these needs. The second objective will be to strengthen relationships with these clients, governmental and other stakeholders, and other Implementing Partners, thus increasing the visibility of Axios and its potential impact on strengthening the Nigerian health system.
Thus, the DCD will represent Axios’ corporate vision and strategic objectives in Nigeria together with the CD and act as the head of the Axios Foundation in Nigeria in the CD’s absence. He/she will oversee members of a senior management team that may include Project Director(s) for part of the overall Axios/Nigeria portfolio, and have responsibility for Axios performance in a number of projects. However, all these responsibilities will be carried out with an external focus on clients and stakeholders with a view to maximizing the impact of Axios and its work.
Job Responsibilities
- Represent, together with the CD, Axios’ corporate vision and strategic objectives in Nigeria, and ensure that Axios staff in Nigeria understand and commit to them
- Oversee, as agreed with the CD, members of the AF Nigeria senior management team, ensuring that Project Directors work closely and effectively with each other, as needed, and with the Finance Director
- Ensure, through the senior management team, implementation of selected projects (as agreed with the CD) within budget, to the satisfaction of clients, and to a high standard of technical quality and compliance with donor requirements
- Develop and maintain exceptionally strong relationships with AF clients and donors in Nigeria, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of their operations, personnel, structures, constraints and needs in order to maximize and optimize the extent and quality of Axios work on their projects.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with senior key personnel in GON, Federal agencies, state governments, other USG IPs and all stakeholders involved in improving the health system in Nigeria in both the public and private sectors
- Lead and facilitate knowledge capture, sharing and application from program implementation in a strategic manner across programs and across the company
- Identify and participate in business development opportunities within Nigeria.
Minimum Requirements
- Advanced degree such as an MBA, MPH, MHA, MD or PhD
- Competent program and budget management skills for international, multi-year development projects
- Minimum of 5 years of public health experience, including HIV&AIDS, and including work with international implementing organizations
- Experience working and networking with international donors (e.g. USAID, CDC, GFATM), major international NGOs working in the health arena; and other bilateral and multi-lateral development agencies operating in the international public health sector
- Experience in facilitating project M&E and using resulting analysis for strategic program guidance
- Experience in leading and working with multi-lingual and multi-cultural staff
- Knowledge of government contracting and proposal budget development
- Relevant work experience in sub-Saharan Africa or similar context
Preferred Qualifications
- Proven track record in business development in the international health arena including program design, proposal management, networking, partnership cultivation, and marketing an asset
- Experience in cultivating and stewardship of clients, partners and donors an asset
