The Director, Content Strategy oversees CARE USA’s story gathering and development, budget management, and partners with Regional and Country Office staff and contractors to bring the story of CARE’s work in 100+ countries around the world to life. This position serves as the managing editor of CARE News, the website where CARE content is published first. This role also manages content against CARE’s organizational strategy and goals, builds and leads complex content teams across departments, and moves top-tier content into the market as part of CARE’s Communications Center of Excellence. In collaboration with other key organizational leads, the Director, Content Strategy seeks out story trends and key, sometimes unforeseen or underreported issues for CARE. The content developed in turn drives supporter acquisition, engagement, and retention by leveraging data, analyzing the competitive landscape, and recognizing opportunities for innovation. The Director, Content Strategy is an experienced leader with expertise in both the art and science of data-driven content strategies who can help position CARE as the leading poverty-fighting nonprofit for women and girls.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Developing and implementing a content strategy for CARE USA
This role serves as managing editor of the CARE News editorial platforms (web and email) in cooperation with other departments across CARE to bring CARE’s stories to life and deliver a unified supporter experience; plays a lead role in executing the organization’s Supporter Engagement strategy; oversees development of a proactive and data-driven rapid-response content strategy around breaking news and CARE’s emergency response. The person in this role will also seek to broaden distribution of CARE content beyond owned channels, developing strategic partnerships with a range of content channels and online news streams
This role is a main point of contact between CARE USA and CARE Country Offices to facilitate and enable locally led content capture and development; designs and leads story trainings for CARE’s global staff; seeks out, manages and reviews locally led content, co-designs and manages a story intake system and screens incoming content for further development in partnership with the original storyteller.
Major campaigns and publications
The person in this role Co-leads the vision for content that anchors CARE campaigns, events, and major publications. This role is a primary owner of CARE’s cross-channel and cross-platform content calendar; provides the organization with high-quality content to drive a unified organizational narrative around key promotional moments: International Women’s Day, International Day of the Girl, key events and anniversaries, etc.; directly manages at least 4-6 content packages annually; creates and maintains project plans; coordinates input and review across large, cross-functional teams; defines delivery parameters; ensures deliverables are completed and delivered on schedule and within budget; ensures content meets KPIs.
Internal strategic partner
As a leader in CARE’s Content Center of Excellence, this role will build operational frameworks and capabilities to rapidly and efficiently deliver quality content; provide thought leadership for implementing industry-leading strategies and standards for developing and maintaining content in multiple channels and platforms; analyze and actively use data and metrics to inform editorial and strategic decisions and to create accountability for results. This role also liaises CARE International’s global leadership team; represents CARE’s content strategy at conferences, through trainings and other public engagements; coordinates with global cross-functional teams and other stakeholders to ensure building, learning, and scaling best-in-class digital communications initiatives, grounded in data.
