Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

CARE is hiring a Manager to support enterprise-wide strategic communications - including Executive Thought Leadership. We are looking for someone with an excellent understanding of how global news cycles operate who will garner quality media coverage for CARE – including through thought leadership - to grow our voice, profile, and message-pull through in US and global media. This work includes proactive media engagement as well as managing incoming media inquiries. As part of this role the Manager will also work alongside colleagues across CARE US, including the Office of the President, to draft press releases, statements and other media and social content, and ensure that CARE spokespeople are empowered with the necessary training and other resources to confidently represent CARE in media interviews. 

Reporting to the Executive Director of Media and Communications, the ideal candidate should have a strong background working on a media relations team or in an agency setting, and a deep understanding of Strategic Communications. They should also be strong writer and have a passion for humanitarian work and our mission to end hunger and poverty. While this position can be remote, preference will be given to candidates based in Washington, D.C. Strong preference is also given to candidates who have experience working with a humanitarian NGO or in a major communications agency.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Media Relations Management

General media relations – especially proactive outreach – on behalf of CARE CEO, Leadership and other CARE US Teams. Specifically target and build relationships with the media, breaking news reporters/editors/producers, and news desks, as well as reporters/editors/producers covering issues and beats relevant to CARE. Also fields, vets and manages interview requests, and connects journalists with appropriate information and CARE spokespeople. Additionally, the Senior Manager supports press briefings and staffs interviews as needed.

Executive Thought Leadership

In collaboration with the Executive Director, the candidate will manage the coordination and execution of CARE’s Executive Thought Leadership plan - aimed at elevating the POV of our CEO and other leadership around relevant issues. This will include internal project management, content and editorial product creation, media outreach and relationship building, and working to identify and secure Leadership participation in appropriate fora and engagements.

Spokesperson Liaison

Identify and support spokespeople - including Senior Leadership - to help ensure they are prepared for interviews. This includes developing/drafting, obtaining approvals for, and disseminating talking points and briefing packets; as well as providing media trainings/workshops for spokespeople, both on a consistent and ad hoc basis.

CEO Social Media Engagement

Collaborate closely with CARE’s Office of the President to manage the CEO’s larger social media engagement strategy. This will include proactively developing and securing approvals for CEO social media posts, monitoring of analytics, creating forward looking editorial and content calendars, and securing relevant content from across the CARE network for use on leadership channels.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, international relations, journalism or other related field.
  • 8 to 12 years of (combined) media relations/communications/public relations/journalism experience.
  • At least 5 years of media relations experience either at an agency or in-house.
  • Knowledge of key U.S. and international media outlets.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Prior experience managing Executive level communications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in communications, international relations, journalism or other related field.
  • Background in crisis communications, international, public or humanitarian affairs.
  • Client management experience in an agency setting
  • Experience working in the Global South.
  • Experience working for a humanitarian NGO.
  • Experience in complex, decentralized organizations.
  • Ability to work in a high stress environment against humanitarian crisis backdrops.
