Internships at the IAEA

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) accepts a limited number of interns each year. Internships are offered to individuals currently pursuing a university degree or who have recently completed their studies. (Please refer to the IAEA internship webpage for full eligibility criteria.)

Purpose of the Internship Programme:

  • To provide interns with practical work experience aligned with their academic background or personal interests, and to familiarize them with the work of the IAEA and the broader United Nations system.
  • To support the IAEA’s programmes by engaging qualified students specializing in a wide range of professional disciplines.

Internships typically last a minimum of three months and a maximum of one year.

Organizational Setting

The Department of Technical Cooperation (TC) includes the Office of the Deputy Director General, four regional Divisions (Africa; Asia and the Pacific; Europe; and Latin America and the Caribbean), the Division of Programme Support and Coordination, and the Programme of Action for Cancer Therapy (PACT). The department is responsible for setting strategic direction and managing the planning, implementation, and monitoring of the IAEA’s technical cooperation programme in collaboration with Member States, in alignment with the IAEA Medium Term Strategy.

The Division for Latin America and the Caribbean manages the technical cooperation programme in the region, responding to development priorities of Member States through effective programme planning, implementation, stakeholder engagement, and coordination.

Main Purpose of the Internship

To provide the intern with knowledge and training related to the implementation of the IAEA’s Technical Cooperation Programme in the Latin America and Caribbean region—specifically in the areas of programming, implementation, knowledge management, and partnership development.

Key Duties and Expected Results

  • Programme/Project Management:
    Gain an understanding of TC programme delivery and its impact. Receive hands-on training in project design and planning, implementation (particularly of human resource-related components), monitoring and evaluation, and financial closure of projects.
  • Knowledge Management:
    Assist Programme Management Officers in preparing achievement reports for selected projects. Gain experience drafting content for the “TC Web and Success Stories” in the region. Receive training on relevant TC project management platforms, including PCMF and AIPS.

Qualifications and Experience

  • University degree in management, social sciences, science and technology, or international relations.
  • Experience in compiling, processing, and reporting data using databases.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 2010 (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), which is the standard at the IAEA.
  • Excellent oral and written English is required. Knowledge of Spanish is an asset. Additional proficiency in any other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, or Russian) is also desirable.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates must be at least 20 years of age and have completed a minimum of three years of full-time university studies toward a first degree (bachelor’s or equivalent).
  • Applicants may apply up to one year after obtaining a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree.
  • Candidates must not have previously participated in the IAEA internship programme.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is essential. Knowledge of other IAEA official languages is an asset.
  • Applications must include two signed letters of recommendation.
