ICT and Development Section (IDS) under the Information and Communications Technology and Disaster Risk Reduction Division (IDD) of ESCAP aims to bridge the digital divide and accelerate digital transformation in the Asia-Pacific region.
Operates the Asia Pacific Information Superhighway (APIS) platform.
Conducts evidence-based research, capacity-building programs, demand-driven regional advisory services, and intergovernmental policy dialogues for member States and partner organizations.
Internship Overview:
Duration: 2 to 6 months.
Unpaid and full-time, working 5 days per week (35 hours).
Supervised by a staff member of the Section.
Daily responsibilities depend on individual background and Section’s work.
Key Duties:
Research: Assist officers in analytical research on ICT and digital agendas for sustainable development, including the Asia-Pacific Digital Transformation Report.
Information and Data: Compile, process, and analyze ICT-related data for development in Asia-Pacific, including LDCs, LLDCs, and SIDS; may involve econometric skills and economic modeling.
Programme and Project Support: Assist in implementing ICT and digital data projects for member States.
Website Management: Support updating, managing, and promoting Section work on the ESCAP website.
Organization of Events: Assist in organizing intergovernmental meetings and regional workshops, including drafting concept notes, memos, programs, contacting participants, and performing administrative tasks.
Other Substantive and Administrative Tasks: Carry out additional tasks as required by the Chief of the Section and Division.
Qualifications / Special Skills
Must meet one of the following:
Enrolled in or completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or higher).
Enrolled in or completed the final year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).
Additional requirements:
Not required to have significant prior work experience.
ICT literate in standard software applications; skills in statistical software (e.g., Stata) preferred.
Demonstrated interest in the UN’s work and commitment to the UN Charter ideals.
Ability to interact successfully with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, demonstrating tolerance and understanding.
Languages
Required: Fluency in English (oral and written).
Desirable: Knowledge of another UN official language (e.g., Chinese or Russian).
