Job Description

Internship – Subregional Office for South-East Asia, UNESCAP

  • Work Location: Bangkok, Thailand
  • Expected Duration: 3–6 months

Duties and Responsibilities

  • ESCAP aims to support its members and associate members in advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
  • The Subregional Office for Southeast Asia (SROSEA) promotes sustainable development across Southeast Asia by bringing a subregional perspective to global issues and tailoring programs to regional needs.
  • It supports the eleven Southeast Asian member States in implementing the 2030 Agenda through policy dialogues, capacity-building initiatives, and partnerships with academic institutions, civil society, and the private sector.
  • SROSEA also coordinates with ASEAN on key priorities such as digital transformation, climate action, and inclusive economic growth, while fostering youth engagement and innovation to address regional challenges.

  • The internship is located within the Subregional Office for South-East Asia of ESCAP.
  • The internship is UNPAID and full-time for a period of three to six months, depending on the needs of the office. Preference will be given to those who can commit to a longer duration.
  • Interns work five days per week (35 hours) in a hybrid setup under the supervision of the Head of the Subregional Office for South-East Asia.
  • This internship is conducted in person, with the duty station located in Bangkok.

Main responsibilities include:

  • Undertaking research and policy analysis concerning the adoption and implementation of UN SDGs in the Southeast Asian region.
  • Assisting in drafting content for backgrounders, information and promotional materials such as flyers, press releases, newsletter articles, and social media posts.
  • Supporting SROSEA’s engagement with various stakeholders in the Southeast Asian region by identifying possible activities and assisting in the preparation of events, meetings, and other engagements on ESCAP’s work.
  • Helping design information materials, including publication covers, presentation templates, flyers, infographics, and social media visuals.
  • Initiating and carrying out additional tasks or special projects, as required.

Qualifications / Special Skills
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

Other qualifications include:

  • No professional work experience is required.
  • A field of study closely related to the internship is required.
  • Must be a student in the final year of a bachelor’s program, or enrolled in/completed a Master’s or Ph.D. program.
  • Proof of student status must be provided with the application; an official certificate will be required later.
  • Good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, PowerPoint, and Teams.
  • Training, education, advanced coursework, or skills should benefit the UN during the internship.
  • Strong research and writing skills are preferred.

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is an asset.

Additional Information

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
  • Travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or their sponsoring institution.
  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken may need to obtain appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
  • Successful candidates should discuss visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
