Report to the Chief of the DMFAS Programme, Debt and Development Finance Branch, Globalization and Development Division.
Support the Debt and Financial Analysis Unit (DFAU) in performing UNCTAD’s three pillars: research, consensus building, and technical assistance related to debt and development finance issues.
Assist in preparing the UN Secretary-General’s annual report to the UN General Assembly on external debt sustainability and development.
Provide secretarial support to the UNCTAD Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Financing for Development.
Conduct research and provide technical assistance on:
Mobilization of external and domestic, public and private financial resources for development.
Debt and debt sustainability issues and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Systemic issues underlying developing countries’ debt vulnerabilities and reform proposals.
Assist in writing assessment reports.
Assist in drafting project proposals and project budgets.
Assist in monitoring progress in debt management projects.
Assist in preparing capacity-building course materials.
Support the use of IT tools and applications to improve operational workflows and project management efficiency.
Ensure access to a computer with Office 365 applications and implement basic IT security best practices:
Install latest operating system, software, and security updates.
Enable built-in software firewall.
Use a password manager for strong password creation and secure access to UNCTAD/UN resources.
Observe all applicable UN rules, regulations, and procedures.
Provide the receiving department with copies of materials prepared during the internship; UN retains all property rights over work produced.
Respect the impartiality and independence of the UN and receiving department.
Maintain confidentiality; do not communicate internal information externally without authorization.
Refrain from any conduct that could adversely reflect on the UN.
Understand that there is no expectation of employment within the UN after the internship; interns are ineligible to apply for professional-level positions for six months following the internship.
Qualifications/Special Skills
Enrolled in or completed a graduate program (second university degree or higher) or final year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level).
Computer literacy in standard software applications (MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Teams).
Keen interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter.
Ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
University degree in economics, political science, development studies, or a related area.
No professional work experience is required; relevant training, education, or coursework should benefit the UN during the internship.
Languages
Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.
