Duties and Responsibilities

  • UNEP is the leading global environmental authority, setting the global environmental agenda, promoting sustainable development implementation, and advocating for the global environment.
  • The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) is located in Montreal and administered by UNEP.
  • Internship located at SCBD under supervision of the Programme Management Officer for Planning, Monitoring, Reporting and Reviewing, and the Programme Management Officer for National Reports, Monitoring, Review and National Reporting Unit, Implementation Support Division.
  • Internship start date: February 2026, duration of three (3) months with possible extension.
  • UNPAID internship; interns work five days per week (35–40 hours).
  • Costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or sponsoring institutions.
  • Intern responsibilities include:
    • Assist with planning, monitoring, reporting, and review of the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework implementation, including updated national biodiversity strategies, action plans, and national reports.
    • Review and analyze updated NBSAPs, national targets, national reports, and other relevant documents from Parties for documentation or analyses to be prepared for meetings and capacity development activities.
    • Assist with facilitating submissions of updated NBSAPs and national reports.
    • Support the organization and preparation of meetings (virtual or in-person) organized by the Planning, Monitoring, Reporting and Review Unit, including logistical support, note-taking, and report preparation.
    • Assist with other duties as requested by the supervisor, including by the Executive Secretary.

Qualifications / Special Skills

  • Applicants must meet one of the following:
    • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or higher).
    • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).
    • Have graduated with a university degree.
  • Computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact successfully with individuals from different cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
  • Preferred areas of study: international sustainable development, international environmental policy, public finance and development planning, biodiversity-related or environmental sciences.
  • Familiarity with the Convention and Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework desirable.
  • Skills for using AI to analyze or synthesize large reports and datasets desirable.
  • No professional work experience required, but relevant field of study is required.

Languages

  • Fluency in oral and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN language (Spanish or French) is desirable.
  • Definitions:
    • Fluency: rating of “fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand).
    • Knowledge of: rating of “confident” in two of the four areas.
