OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME: The objectives of the Communications Department are to: - ensure timely public information on longstanding and emerging public health issues; - define and promote a consistent corporate identity for WHO internally and externally; and - create a 21st century culture of communications in WHO by strengthening capacity at every level. The Web site is WHO’s public face – its window to the world. It currently receives approximately 3.5 million visitors per month. Within the Department, the Web Team has overall responsibility for and the systems that support it, specifically, to: deliver accurate and timely information to WHO’s main target audiences; ensure information is correctly focused, including the availability in the six languages of the Organization as appropriate; and ensure the site is in line with best practice and industry standards.
Description of duties: The purpose of the post is to provide editorial quality and consistency of style and presentation of English language content across the WHO corporate web site and WHO sub-sites, as well as other corporate products. It is to ensure consistency and continuity with regard to web policies, editorial standards and best incumbent will report to the Web Editor-in-Chief and will work particularly closely with the Editor-in-Chief, the Mutilinulal manager and the Training officer. The role will also include extensive interaction with focal points across the Organization, including regional and country offices. This position liases with others in the Department to ensure the editorial quality of all corporate communications products. The incumbent will perform the following duties:
EDITORIAL AND WRITING - Edit the corporate communications products, including but not limited to web content, to ensure they adhere to house style. - With the Editor-in-Chief, to research, write and update the Web style guide and Writing for the web guides. - In liaison with the Web Trainer, to develop a “writing and editing for the web” training module and materials, as well as FAQs and other content-related training information. To assist and attend training sessions related to content. Policy development - To contribute to the development of content-related web policies and guidelines, and promote mechanisms to ensure communication of, and adherence to these policies. - In collaboration with group leaders in the Web Team, to identify gaps in web policies, guidelines and FAQs, to coordinate the development of new guidelines, and to improve existing policies and guidelines as needed. CONTENT DEVELOPMENT - To contribute to the further development and creation of corporate topic-based sites and other top level content, including researching, writing and editing, in particular the online “ask the expert” feature. - To ensure the health topics pages respond to users needs, particularly by aligning these with search terms used and ensuring regional offices are informed of changes; - From an editorial and content management perspective, to review and provide feedback to technical departments on new web site design during the development of their web sites. - To provide ongoing support and feedback to ensure that sites contain relevant, well-structured and clear information and follow WHO web policy and general good web practice. To provide Web managers with feedback on the overall content management situation of WHO web site to avoid duplication and identify synergies. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Education: Essential: University degree (information management, communication or other closely related discipline) or equivalent professional training or self-study or work experience. Desirable: Further qualification in health sciences.Skills: -Proven ability to research, write and edit for the web. -Strong communication and interpersonal skills. -Proven and extensive skill in explaining technical matters and limitations of technology to clients without backgrounds in IT. -Ability to manage client expectations. -Extensive knowledge in web site design and production, from site inception and development to ongoing maintenance. -Motivation to work in an international environment and in a team. -Open to new ideas and challenges and willingness to take initiatives.

Experience: Essential: -Minimum 2 years’ experience in either information management or communications in an environment with a technical/IT focus; and experience working on a large corporate website. -Experience with the use and implementation of web content management systems. Desirable: -Familiarity with web technologies and principals of internet best practices. -Experience with web development projects. -Experience with client services and communications.Languages: English mother-tongue and a good working knowledge in French. Another UN language an asset.

Annual salary: (Net of tax) USD 42818 at single rate USD 45650 with primary dependents Post Adjustment: 73.9 % of the above figure(s).
