At CARE, we seek a world of hope, tolerance and social justice, where poverty has been overcome and people live with dignity and security.
This has been our vision since 1945, when we were founded to send lifesaving CARE Packages® to survivors of World War II. Today, CARE is a global leader in the movement to eradicate poverty. In 2016, CARE worked in 94 countries and reached 80 million people with an incredible range of life-saving programs. We also put women and girls at the center of our work because we know that we cannot overcome poverty until all people have equal rights and opportunities. We seek dynamic, innovative thinkers to further our mission. If you share our core beliefs: poverty is an injustice; poverty is solvable; and together, we have the power to end it, join us.
The 2017 Family Planning Summit, held in London on July 11, aimed to catalyze action to ensure that 120 million additional women and girls have access to contraceptive information and services by 2020. In a time when sexual and reproductive rights are under threat, this was a critical moment to galvanize strong commitments to universal access to contraception/family planning.
The Summit convened over 600 donors, policymakers, and advocates. There were commitments from 35 FP2020 focus countries (including 3 new commitments), 11 donor countries (including 3 new commitments), 9 civil society organizations (including 6 new commitments), 16 private sector partners (including 13 new commitments), and 2 FP2020 foundation commitment-makers. They collectively committed $2.5 billion in funding to deliver rights-based family planning. Family planning in humanitarian crises was featured prominently on the Summit agenda and was specifically mentioned in 12 commitments by FP2020 focus countries, donors and civil society organizations, with key donors and governments committing to accelerate progress in reaching all women and young people affected by crisis with family planning.
This exciting new momentum for reaching women and girls in humanitarian crises is consistent with FP2020 and CARE goals to support the provision of rights-based family planning information, services and supplies to women and girls everywhere. CARE is already working to reach women, girls and families in some of the most difficult contexts in the world, and has achieved impressive results in increasing access to and use of contraception in places like Chad, Mali and DRC. This one year Fellowship will provide an early/mid-career professional an opportunity to help put the commitments made at the Summit into action.
