Job Description

Chemonics is conducting a recruit for a full time Global Practice Lead to lead the global Economic Growth and Trade (EGT) practice. Chemonics’ current EGT portfolio includes projects and IDIQs with USAID, FCDO, and the European Commission.

The goal of the EGT Practice is to advance Chemonics’ ability to deliver innovative EGT proposals and projects and engage in impactful thought leadership with the development industry across five sub-sectors including public financial management, trade and regulatory reform, business enabling environment, financial services, and entrepreneurship and enterprise development, and cross cutting subjects including workforce development, youth, gender and social inclusion, governance, and climate change. The Practice Lead will lead the practice management team, providing technical guidance to proposal teams and ongoing projects, developing technical resources for the global workforce, fostering internal knowledge-sharing, engaging with the development industry, and managing EGT IDIQs. The Practice Lead will also work proactively to advance Chemonics’ technical excellence by identifying innovative approaches to achieving outcomes, engaging new partners and potential staff, and driving thought leadership and knowledge sharing amongst the global workforce We are looking for a demonstrated leader who has a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.

Responsibilities include:

  • Tracks, analyzes, and shares development trends and priorities within the EGT technical sector (indicating their relative importance to USAID and/or other clients when appropriate).
  • Disseminates client initiatives, strategies, and approaches for consideration and integration into proposals and projects.
  • Advances body of knowledge and quality standards in the EGT field. Formulates approaches to guide Chemonics’ work, new business efforts, and technical assignments. Advises clients and the company on technical trends and programming priorities.​​​​
  • Oversees the capture, packaging, and dissemination of successful approaches from Chemonics’ projects and industry programs and activities.
  • Contributes to industry forums, such as technical working groups, conferences, learning events, and blogs.
  • Leads development of technical abstracts, articles, primers, tools, and summaries of Chemonics’ approaches in the EGT sector.
  • Develops effective and collaborative working relationships with key clients, including USAID technical staff, strategic partners, and stakeholders, and continually promotes outstanding client service and technical leadership, including the introduction and sharing of new and innovative interventions.
  • Formulates strategies, new directions, and techniques to grow the company, and utilizes networks with clients, consultants, and counterparts to advance successful new business opportunities.
  • Supports regional business units to pursue country-based programs. Provides input for proposal strategies and content. Shares knowledge of competition, potential partners, consultants, and external technical resources. As needed, undertakes leadership roles in proposal development, providing vision and contributing to program design.
  • Supports identification and recruitment of individuals with technical expertise who may be available for short- and long-term assignments.
  • Oversees assigned indefinite quantity contracts and Washington-based projects.
  • Provides and facilitates provision of technical support to Chemonics’ projects by providing input on technical deliverables, undertaking technical assignments, reviewing scopes of work, and helping overseas staff apply good technical practices.​​​​​​
  • Periodically surveys users of practice guidance to ensure information provided has helped regional business units, proposal teams, and project teams make decisions that have furthered Chemonics’ development impact.
  • Promotes staff development through coaching, mentoring, and facilitating professional growth opportunities.
  • Delegates, supervises, and evaluates performance of assigned staff, most directly the practice specialist(s). Communicates clear performance goals and standards and ensures staff receives regular constructive performance feedback, prompt resolution of problems, and time and opportunity to grow and develop in key competence areas.
  • Fosters and demonstrates a workplace inclusive of creating opportunity, serving others, building trust, innovation and exceeding expectations.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 8 years of technically relevant work, including at least 5 in the field of international development required.
  • Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education and work experience in relevant technical competency area.
  • Demonstrated expertise in economic growth and trade field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of trends in relevant areas, donor initiatives and programs, most notably USAID initiatives and programs, and a breadth of industry organizations (large and small businesses).
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing. This includes public presentations and contribution to publications.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and manage working relationships with clients, partners, and technical experts.
  • Willingness to travel and work abroad a minimum of 4-8 weeks per year; experience working on technical programs in developing countries preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and supervise department staff, multiple project teams, remote staff and other initiatives.
  • Ability to solve complex technical, managerial, or operational problems and evaluation options based on relevant information, resources, well-rounded experience, and knowledge.
  • Strong knowledge of MS Office applications.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
  • Foreign language proficiency preferred
