Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) provides leadership, operational support, and oversight of the United Nations Security Management System (UNSMS) worldwide. As a global leader in security risk management, UNDSS enables the safe and effective delivery of United Nations programmes in challenging environments.

This internship is located in the Office of the Under-Secretary-General (OUSG), Strategic Planning Service (SPS), Strategic Planning Unit (SPU) within UNDSS. The SPU supports senior management on strategic planning and contributes to UNDSS efforts to enable implementation of the UN mandate while ensuring staff safety and security.

Internship Details:

  • Duration: 3 to 6 months
  • Type: Full-time (35 hours/week), unpaid
  • Alternative arrangements (part-time, hybrid, or remote) may be requested by successful candidates
  • Supervisor: Programme Management Officer
  • Main collaboration: Strategic Planning Unit

Responsibilities include:

  • Support implementation of machine learning models and data analytics for strategic decision-making
  • Conduct research and analyze data across diverse fields from reliable sources
  • Employ strategic, long-term thinking and apply both quantitative and qualitative data techniques
  • Critically evaluate and interpret complex data sets
  • Coordinate technical communication with internal and external stakeholders on insight and innovation initiatives
  • Contribute to development of interactive web platforms for visualization and knowledge-sharing
  • Assist in the design and formatting of reports, presentations, and infographics
  • Translate data and insights into analytics and reports
  • Draft and revise briefs, backgrounders, and programmatic documents
  • Conduct timely research on topics relevant to UNDSS operations
  • Provide support for meeting preparation and follow-ups
  • Manage and update data/information platforms
  • Draft correspondence and talking points using relevant data
  • Disseminate relevant materials such as meeting notes
  • Perform other duties as required

Qualifications/Special Skills
To be eligible for the UN Internship Programme, applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate programme (Master’s or equivalent)
  • Be in the final year of a first university degree programme (Bachelor’s or equivalent)
  • Have recently graduated with a university degree (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD)

Additional requirements:

  • Attach official proof of enrollment or graduation to the application
  • Proficiency in standard office software (e.g., MS Office 365)
  • Strong interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to its values
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Strong task and time management skills
  • Knowledge in Data Science and familiarity with Machine Learning/Deep Learning algorithms
  • Understanding of security issues in humanitarian/development contexts
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and communicate data accurately and clearly

Languages

  • Fluency in English (oral and written) is required
  • Knowledge of another UN official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is an advantage

  • Interns are not financially compensated by the United Nations
  • Travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or their sponsors
  • Interns may need to secure appropriate visa or work authorization before the internship begins
