Background

UNDP has operated in Ethiopia since 1981. Since then, UNDP has focused on providing Ethiopia with strategic support to build national capacity and enhance the country’s development results in the areas of poverty reduction and economic growth, democratic governance as well as climate-resilient development. UNDP is currently assisting the Government of Ethiopia (GoE) to overcome its structural challenges as it strives to become a democratic, peaceful and prosperous middle-income country. It supports a successful transition to democratic governance, addresses drivers of conflict to consolidate and build peace, fosters enabling conditions for expanded job creation by the private sector (especially SMEs) and accelerates the transition to a green economy resilient to climate change. Gender equality and women’s empowerment are embedded across all areas of work.
In alignment with the CPD (2020-2025), UNDP has also been investing to strengthen the capacity of key federal, and regional partners while supporting communities in Ethiopia for a successful transition to democratic governance, address drivers of conflict, promote peacebuilding, create enabling environment for expanded job creation by the private sector (especially SMEs) and accelerate the transition to a climate-resilient green. Gender equality and women’s empowerment are integrated across all areas of work.

Accordingly, UNDP Ethiopia’s communication and advocacy strategy focuses on innovative storytelling, dynamic visuals, and interactive engagement. It leverages cutting-edge tools, vibrant campaigns, and human-centred narratives to inspire action, foster collaboration, and highlight UNDP’s transformative impact on Ethiopia’s development journey.

Objective

The UNDP Ethiopia Country Office, Development Communications and Advocacy Hub is looking for an intern who is motivated, independent, and ready to learn from the works of the hub at the UNDP Country Office in Addis Ababa.

The Internship will offer graduate-level students the opportunity to acquire direct exposure to UNDP’s work. The program complements development-oriented studies with practical experience in various aspects of multilateral technical cooperation. It allows recent graduates to get a taste of UNDP’s development work. The Intern is thus expected to participate in a variety of tasks and work with the different thematic areas along with the staff members and the Team Leader for the hub.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall guidance and direct supervision of the DCAH Team Leader, and in coordination with the Communications Analyst and Graphic Analyst of the Country Office, the Intern is expected to perform the following tasks:

  • Contribute to the development of information materials such as press kits, fact sheets, infographics, and brochures for the media and other target audiences, including partners and stakeholders
  • Documenting stories from various projects and programme interventions for both internal and external dissemination and publication
  • Assist in the development of digital content for social media platforms (Facebook, YouTube, X, LinkedIn, TikTok, Instagram)
  • Assist in the production and editing of short in-house videos.
  • Assist in editing images/photos and layout design.
  • Assist in the organization and updating of the photo archive/ library.
  • Assist in updating the media and partners list.
  • Assist various events, field trips and media engagements
  • Assist in the production and dissemination of visibility materials
  • Other activities as advised by the supervisor

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Applicants must be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher) OR have recently graduated with a first-level university degree in communication, journalism, international relations or other related fields.
  • Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
  • Ability to work for 6 consecutive months.
  • Interest in working on communications.

Language:

  • Fluency in oral and written English and Amharic is required. Knowledge of other UN languages is an asset. (written and spoken)
