Job Description

Work Location

  • In-Person. This internship is designed to be full-time and in person but can be adjusted based on the needs of the successful candidate.

Expected duration

  • Up to six (6) months

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) provides leadership, operational support, and oversight of the United Nations security management system globally.
  • UNDSS focuses on enabling safe and effective delivery of UN programmes in complex environments.
  • The Operational Resilience Section (ORS) supports improving the Department’s resilience by creating and implementing new ideas and solutions for global security challenges.
  • The intern will assist the Country Planning pillars by:
    • Advising, compiling, and communicating with field staff on strategic and operational planning processes and outputs.
    • Supporting field colleagues in developing country plans and workplans using templates and tools.
    • Assisting pillar leads in organizing and delivering training, mentoring sessions, and workshops.
    • Reviewing user manuals with pillar leads.
    • Supporting data entry in digital platforms and tools.
    • Assisting with data collection systems and analytics to optimize processes and data quality.
    • Conducting research, analysis, and interpreting trends and patterns.
    • Performing ad-hoc analysis and reporting as requested by supervisors.
    • Performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/special skills

  • Applicants must meet one of the following:
    • Enrolled in or completed a graduate program (Master’s or equivalent), or
    • Enrolled in or completed the final academic year of a first university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent).
  • Official written proof from the university must be attached to the application.
  • Field of study should be related to: Programme/Project Management, Communications, Management and Strategy, Analytics, Operations Research, Economics, Information Management, or Business Administration.
  • Computer literacy in standard software applications is required.
  • Demonstrated interest in the United Nations and commitment to the UN Charter ideals.
  • Ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • No prior work experience required; however, knowledge of project management methodologies, communications, and visualization tools (Power Query, Power BI, Tableau, ArcGIS) is desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft 365 Applications is required.
  • Interest in information management and emerging technologies (e.g., machine learning, generative AI) is desirable.
  • Complete online application with Cover Note and Candidate Profile is mandatory.

Languages

  • Fluency in English (oral and written) is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.

Additional Information

  • Internship is UNPAID.
  • Interns are responsible for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses.
  • Interns may need appropriate visa/work authorization depending on country.
  • Successful candidates should clarify visa requirements before accepting the offer.

  • Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken may be required to obtain appropriate visas and work authorization.
