Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) provides leadership, operational support, and oversight of the United Nations Security Management System (UNSMS) globally. Its mission is to enable United Nations system programme activities through trusted security leadership and solutions.

This internship is based in the UNDSS field office in Beijing and offers a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience in security risk management within the UN system. Interns contribute directly or indirectly to peace and security, human rights, and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Under the supervision of a staff member, the intern will:

  • Assist in collecting information for assessments, monthly snapshots, and flash reports
  • Support physical security assessments of UNSMS premises
  • Coordinate with the guard force at UNSMS premises
  • Assist in drafting administrative tasks (e.g., travel arrangements, logistics inventory)
  • Provide translation support during meetings with Host Government authorities
  • Take meeting minutes as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications / Special Skills
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school programme (Master’s or equivalent)
  • Be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a Bachelor’s degree programme
  • Have graduated with a university degree as defined above

Official written proof from the university supporting one of the above must be attached to the application.

Additional requirements:

  • No prior professional experience is required
  • Field of study must be relevant to the internship
  • Proficiency in standard software applications (MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams)
  • Familiarity with media platforms and communication tools
  • Basic understanding of social media trends and usage
  • Experience managing or creating content for social media channels
  • Familiarity with photography software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom)
  • A valid driver’s license is required

Languages

  • Fluency in English (oral and written) and Chinese (oral and written) is required
  • Knowledge of French or another UN language is an asset

Internship-Specific Information

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations
  • Travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or their sponsor
  • Non-citizen interns may need to obtain appropriate visa and work authorization
  • Successful candidates should confirm visa requirements before accepting the internship
