Duties and Responsibilities

Org. Setting and Reporting

  • UN-Habitat is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities
  • Serves as the focal point for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system
  • Works with partners to build inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and communities
  • Promotes urbanization as a positive transformative force for people and communities, reducing inequality, discrimination, and poverty
  • The Cities Investment Facility (CIF) is a multi-stakeholder initiative enabling capital flow into urban development, supporting projects through ideation, design, feasibility, and financial close
  • CIF focuses on enhancing early-stage design and origination, particularly in low and middle-income countries and secondary cities
  • The intern will report to the Programme Manager, Cities Investment Facility

Responsibilities: Technical Support & Development

  • Website application and development: Assist with various stages of website development using established web technologies and frameworks, including creating mock-ups and user flows
  • Technical support: Provide support for planning, design, development, and implementation of websites and application systems
  • Thematic research: Conduct research on tools and best practices on new technologies relevant to information systems and assist in testing and evaluating new products and tools
  • Content management: Assist in updating the website and other tools such as e-learning courses with new information and visual updates
  • Testing and debugging: Assist in testing newly developed features to identify and troubleshoot minor bugs and enhance application quality
  • Documentation and training: Assist in creating technical documentation for applications and training materials for tools in development

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Meet one of the following at the time of application:
    • Enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or higher)
    • Enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level)
    • Graduated with Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. degree
  • Computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Keen interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter
  • Ability to interact successfully with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs
  • Preferred areas of study: Computer Science, Information Technology, Web Development, Software Engineering, or related fields
  • Knowledge and experience with programming languages (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP) is desirable
  • Previous experience with front-end and back-end development, implementation, and maintenance is required

Languages

  • Fluency in oral and written English is required
  • Knowledge of another UN language is desirable

Additional Information

  • Previous UN internship experience should be indicated with the UN entity and specific dates

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations
  • Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions
  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the host country may require a visa and work/employment authorization
  • Successful candidates should discuss specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer
