Programme Management Intern (UN-Habitat, Regional Office for Africa)
Work Location: In-person, Nairobi, Kenya
Expected Duration: 3 months with possibility of extension
Duties and Responsibilities
Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. UN-Habitat is the focal point for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system.
UN-Habitat works with partners to build inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities and communities, promoting urbanization as a positive transformative force for people and communities, reducing inequality, discrimination and poverty.
Through its Regional Office for Africa (ROAf), located in Nairobi, Kenya, UN-Habitat supports African governments to position themselves for sustainable urbanization and the right to adequate housing, within the framework of the 2030 Agenda and SDG 11.
This internship position is based in the Horn and East Africa Sub-Regional Programme under the Programme Management Unit (PMU). The PMU provides financial oversight, administrative services, and advisory support to Project Managers, while also leading capacity development initiatives.
The intern will work under the supervision of the Programme Management Officer responsible for the PMU.
Responsibilities
- Provide general project and administrative support across various functions
- Assist in preparing payment requests by collecting and reviewing invoices for accuracy and completeness
- Support the maintenance and regular updating of administrative trackers (e.g., procurement, travel, cash advances)
- Assist in compiling and updating the inventory of non-expendable items
- Provide logistical support for travel arrangements (flight bookings, car hire, coordination)
- Assist in reviewing and ensuring the quality of reports and documentation submitted by contractors
- Support organizing meetings, trainings, and conferences, including liaising with vendors, obtaining quotations, booking venues, and reconciling documentation
- Maintain well-organized records and files related to ongoing projects
- Perform any other tasks assigned by the supervisor
Qualifications/Special Skills
Applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following:
- Be enrolled in a graduate programme (Master’s, PhD, or equivalent)
- Be in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree programme
- Have recently graduated from a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD programme
Additional requirements:
- Computer literacy in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite)
- Demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to the UN Charter
- Ability to interact with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds
- Preferred fields of study: Business Administration, Finance, Project Management, International Relations, or related fields
- No professional work experience is required, but field of study must be relevant
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint required
- Ability to create and manage monitoring databases is desirable
Languages
- Fluency in oral and written English is required
- Knowledge of another UN language is desirable

- Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations
- Travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or sponsoring institution
- Non-citizens or residents of the internship country must obtain appropriate visa/work authorization
