Job Description

Programme Management Internship – Knowledge and Innovation Branch (UN-Habitat)
Work Location: Hybrid, Nairobi, Kenya
Expected Duration: 6 months

Duties and Responsibilities:
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. UN-Habitat is the focal point for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system. It works with partners to build inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and communities, promoting urbanization as a transformative force to reduce inequality, discrimination, and poverty.

This position is located in the Knowledge and Innovation Branch (KIB), part of the External Relations, Strategy, Knowledge and Innovation Division (ERSKID) of UN-Habitat at its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. ERSKID provides strategic planning, programmatic direction, and operationalization of UN-Habitat’s role in the New Urban Agenda and Sustainable Development Goal 11. KIB is responsible for UN-Habitat’s flagship reports, urban data reporting, and the production of innovative knowledge and tools on urban development.

The intern will report directly to the Programme Management Officer in KIB.

Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the review and quality assurance of housing practices submitted to UN-Habitat, including follow-up with country and regional offices and partners.
  • Assisting in compiling and organizing internal material on housing practices into a searchable and user-friendly format.
  • Conducting desk research on national housing policies and frameworks, identifying trends, innovations, and gaps.
  • Assisting in the preparation of presentations and communication materials for internal briefings or external events.

Qualifications / Special Skills:
Applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
  • Have graduated with a Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD or equivalent degree.

Additional qualifications:

  • Computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter.
  • Ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Preferred areas of study: Public Policy, International Development, Urban Planning, Human Geography.
  • Experience with policy and practice research is desirable.
  • Experience with housing policy is desirable.

Languages:

  • Fluency in oral and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
  • Interns are responsible for their own travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses.
